This online course introduces the language and culture of Japan in a thematic approach. Selected topics are geography, climate, population, and industries. This course is designed to develop Japanese language skills and introduce various aspects of Japanese culture related to course topics using technology and web-based materials. JAPN380 is a hybrid course featuring synchronous and asynchronous learning. Taught in Japanese.
This course helped both language and culture by forcing me to improve my reading and listening skills, as it was taught in Japanese, but it also helped me improve my ability to write fluently and in greater amounts in Japanese. As for culture, it showed how the environment of Japan affected the people, and how they have developed their culture as a way to live with nature and to celebrate it.
Throughout this course there were some specific assignments that really helped my growth in understanding both the language and Japanese people. For example, the presentations forced me to write out lengthy amounts and thoroughly research my topic, as well as practice my speaking ability.
What I really learned in this course, was how a different climate and geographical makeup can make such a difference in the culture that develops. For example, because they have such distinct, varied seasons, Japan has developed not only countermeasures, but ways of celebrating the seasons.
The area I wish to develop further is my ability to proficiently create and speak responses in Japanese. As of now, I understand for the most part, but I am unable to respond in a smooth manner, or honestly with complete coherency. My ability to read aloud could stand improvement as well.
Something this course did well was connecting other beliefs and cultures to my own, something I know is well stressed here at CSUMB. I came out of this with a much better understanding of the differences, and also the similarities between both our cultures.
I hope to use this knowledge when I study abroad, to better understand and enjoy my experience, as well as more appropriately represent myself in a foreign culture.
