This course aims to develop an advanced level of communication by interpreting and analyzing various aspects of modern Japanese literature, including short stories and significant works by authors of the modern period. Taught in Japanese.
In this course we would read and analyze different writings, from a multitude of authors and styes. We also spent a good amount of time on learning kanji and understanding word choice, as it correlated with understanding the intentions of the author and analyzing deeper into the meaning with the words. Some of the categories we covered were short stories, poetry, and even plays. I particularly enjoyed the play (夕鶴 by 木下順二), as I was able to connect it to my experiences doing theater.
I've always been a proponent that reading is essential to understanding language and culture, and that proved true here. By reading these works I gained a better understanding of the time periods they were written, but also about things like dialects and slang, which is important for understanding and communicating with others in real life. Not everyone speaks like a dictionary. I hope from here on I can continue to read and grow my abilities, as well as rediscover the passion I have for reading in English.
Here's a Haiku I wrote for this class:
茶色の葉
足下砕く
風が吹る
which roughly translates to:
The tea colored leaves
Break underfoot
The wind blows
